Web accessibility updates now live on Red
Web accessibility updates 11/7/25
As of Nov. 7, 2025, updates are now active across all sites hosted on the live Red production server, helping ensure better compliance with current accessibility standards and enhancing usability for all visitors.
- Enhanced link color contrast. Link contrast ratios have been adjusted to exceed 4.5:1 for:
- Countdown links
- Research Project page links
- Mega Footer headings
These updates address the Axe Monitor report issue: “Elements must meet minimum color contrast ratio thresholds.”
- Adjusted focus outline for site logo and highlight component thumbnails.
- The site logo and thumbnail images in the Highlight Component now render a focus outline around all four sides in Firefox (manually-detected issue).
This fix ensures full visibility in Firefox.
- Corrected subheading semantics in Pride Points. Subheadings in the Pride Points now render as h3 elements to preserve intended content hierarchy (manually-detected issue).
- Addressed “Filter By” button focus visibility in Directory Listing. The “Filter By“ button now displays a complete focus outline around all four sides in both Chrome and Firefox, improving keyboard navigation and accessibility.
- Proper nesting in Research Project listings. Paragraphs have been moved outside of <dl> elements to prevent errors flagged by Axe Monitor: “Elements must only directly contain properly-ordered…”
- Increased link target sizes on Directory pages and Gravity Forms. Increased profile links spacing so bounding boxes don’t overlap. This was also applied to radio buttons and checkboxes in the Gravity Forms component (reported as “All touch targets must be 24px large, or leave sufficient space” in Axe Monitor Report).
These updates reflect our ongoing commitment to accessibility and usability standards. If you manage content on a Red site, no action is needed; these improvements are already live.
