Preparing for Google Analytics Changes in 2023
End of Universal Analytics
Google recently announced that it will retire its Universal Analytics (UA) -- the version that most Red sites use -- in 2023. Before that happens at the end of June 2023, you can begin to transition to Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
How to Make the Change Heading link
You cannot “upgrade” your existing Analytics properties to GA4. You need to set up a new GA4 property. Do not delete your UA property.
We strongly recommend that you run the two properties in parallel. When dealing with analytics, you cannot retroactively change data that has been collected, which means that GA4 only provides data going forward and you don’t want to lose historical data.
Add the New GA4 Property
To add the new property to your site, please follow these directions:
- Do NOT change Google Analytics ID in the current field in Red’s Theme Settings. That field is only configured for UA properties, and leaving it as is will provide the parallel data until you are ready to remove it.
- You can add the GA4 property via Google Tag Manager (GTM)
- If you haven’t used GTM with your Red site, add your new Google Tag Manager ID in your site’s Theme Settings.
